How to organise the perfect hen do!

Catherine writing today!

It's a big blog today, hence why we decided to leave it until today to write it up! It's been a full week since the hen do and I still haven't quite let it shrink in that it's all over!

As many of you know, I knew absolutely nothing about the goings on in relation to the hen do. I was told to arrive at my mum and dad's house on the 18th of July between 7 and 8pm and to not bring anything with me.
I would be lying if I said I was totally fine in the run up to the hen do. To be totally honest I was a complete wreck. I wasn't sleeping, I even had a mini breakdown a few nights before it due to getting myself I to a tizzy about it.

I knew my sister would never do anything to embarrass me (too much) and that she wouldn't make me do anything that would be out of my comfort zone. But still, the not knowing was killing me. I am also not a massive fan of being the centre of attention ( I actually hate it!) so that May have been part of the panic!

Anyway I arrived down to Omagh on the 18th, having warned James, that if there were people there waiting for me I would kill him as I had no make up on. Thankfully it was my sister, my mum and my brother's girl friend Hayley who were sitting in the house. Our utility room had a massive sheet over its glass door and I was warned that under no circumstance was I to go into the room. We chilled out watching tv and had a glass of wine (which was of course Barefoot -James called down to our local shop to pick it up for me!).

Just before heading to bed my sister decided to give me a quick heads up on what she had planned the next morning!

I was informed that I would be receiving breakfast in bed, then heading down to the Hair Depot in omagh to have my hair done and then over to Benefit to get my makeup done! Then at 12 people would be arriving!

Oooo the excitement! Although that was quite early for everyone to arrive... I started trying to figure out where we could be head.

Again, I didn't have the best sleep that night as I tried to work out just what they could have planned.

So the next morning I work up to this yummy sight!

Nom or what!

We made our way down to the hair dressers where I got the most gorgeous updo done (I wish I had got a picture of the back, it was like my hair and been weaves into itself, an absolute work of art!) and then over to Benefit where I got my makeup done by the lovely Emma!

 Poser selfie require obviously!

We then got home and I was allowed to finally see what I would be wearing for the day!

Now I know my sister knows me very well, but she actually got me the most perfect outfit ever for my hen do!
There in the bedroom was the most gorgeous 1950s white flared dress with black polka dots, a big petticoat and the most stunning red heels!
James had left down my contacts and other necessities that morning (he'd apparently been down twice that morning!

At 11.30 I was finally given the whole itinerary! Not only that but I got a whole brides pack including a gorgeous sash!

We were having a vintage tea party at the house with cocktails, then jumping on a bus to DUBLIN!
We were then playing some party games, heading for dinner and going to see DIRTY DANCING at the Bord Gais theatre!

Oh my goodness was I excited!

We were then heading to DTWO,  a night club in the town where we would be dancing into the early hours!

Seriously folks can you imagine the state of me! I was bouncing off walls! Literally the most perfect hen do that could ever have been created for me!

As people started arriving I was so excited telling them that I knew where we were going and we could talk normally again! My amazing dad even donned a tux and ensured nobodies drink went dry!

Just before jumping on the bus the girls who were heading down from omagh, got this pic taken!

I'm not sure if you can spot them but everyone was wearing stunning shoes! Everyone was told "it's all about the shoes ladies!"
The day was definitely all about the things I love most!

We jumped on the bus and headed down the road. We picked up one of the ladies in Aughnacloy and the amazing Davey from Dainty Davey's pub in the town was just lovely and boarded the bus with a tray full of shots!

When we arrived in to Dublin at the Maldron hotel (which was fantastic!), the rest of the party are there including Nuala, one of my bridesmaids who had flown in direct to Dublin from London.

We all made our ways to my room where we played a game...

James and Nuala had organised between them an interesting game of Mr & Mrs, all technology and all!

Now it would be unfair to show you all the questions without my answers (also it would be incredibly embarrassing for me). But here is a small snippet of James's input to the Game!

He is very... Talented, I am sure you will agree!

After this we headed down for a scrummy meal, then on to the Theatre. Dirty Dancing was incredible. I boogied through it, and sang my heart out. It was definitely Dirty dancing on stage rather than a musical as no one started singing for no reason, and there were just a few added parts! Baby was spot on!

We headed back to the hotel got freshend up, talked about how amazing Dirty Dancing was and then we headed off to DTWO. We had an absolute ball and danced until after 3 in the morning, did some dares... Which most will never be mentioned again, right girls? And got up to some hilarious shenanigans!

I have to say, Dublin was an absolute dream for a hen do! The number of people who came up to me in the nightclub and wished me all the best in my married life was just amazing! The bouncers all had a nice word to say and were all smiles. I would totally recommend heading down for a night out!

We headed back to Omagh the next afternoon on the bus, a little quieter than the trip down I must admit!

And that folks, is how you run the perfect Hen do!

Thank you so much to my amazing sister and Cheif of Honour Ciara, my marvellous mum and my amazing bridesmaids. Of course thanks to all my amazing Hens! It was absolutely incredible!

Bed of Roses, or daffodils, or carnations, or sunflowers, or baby's breath...

So the plan this week is to finally chat to our florist. So Iona if you are reading this prepare yourself for a visit from bride & groomzilla!

Now in all fairness we are not that bad. We will be happy with anything and we trust Iona and her mad green thumbs. We have a few ideas about what we would like. I personally would like to do something that works along with our table centres.

A funny story about the lovely Iona the amazing florist… So as I have said before Iona is like an unofficial auntie, she is Carols (my mum) bestie. So when we announced that we were engaged to be married, Carol and Iona would talk amongst themselves and Iona offered her services. We were thrilled and of course asked Carol to relay our thanks and gratitude. It wasn't until I posted about Iona being our florist that she received the message.

Iona discovered after reading the blog. For us this was hilarious, Iona came in to work with Carol and said "you never told me I was doing the flowers!"

Needless to say this post is my message to her. Expect us soon. And thank you again.

Front page news... Nearly

So it's been a really busy week for us! Not only did we meet with the priest, as James mention on Monday, but we also got plenty more creative things done as well!
But we will get into that at another point!

What many of you will have seen today is that during the past week, I did an interview wirgb the lovely Deborah Armstrong from the Ulster Herald about being shortlisted for the Cosmo Blog Awards!

I have to admit it was funny seeing our mugs in the paper having a smooch but it's so lovely to have so much local support!
We are so thrilled to have made it to this point and are looking forward to whatever may come out of it all! There is still plenty of time to vote for How Geeks get Married over on http://tinyurl.com/votehggm

Next week (if I have survived) I will be giving you the run down on my Hen do!!!
My stomach is doing flips!!!!!

Sign on the dotted line...

This week Catherine and myself are going to visit with our priest. Fr Eamon conducted the wedding ceremony for Catherine's mum and dad, 30 years this October. The same week Catherine and I are to tie be knot. At the same time it will be Fr Eamon's anniversary of his induction to the priesthood.

Tomorrow when we meet the priest we shall be discussing mostly the paperwork side of things. Like getting released from my church so that I can getting married in Catherine's Parish.  Also the wedding form require for the council but more importantly his seal of approval on us actually getting married.

It's very frightening the whole legal paperwork side. My plan on the whole situation is to let Catherine fill most everything in and sign the correct places where I'm told.

From tomorrow evening we will be rather more knowledgable on the subject and hopefully less overwhelmed by it all.

Once again please find the time to vote for us in the Cosmo blog awards. We are still very honoured to be short listed for wedding blog award.

Cluck cluck

So I have come to a realisation recently...

I am getting married soon!

I know, I probably should have realised that seeing as we have been writing this blog and planning the wedding and all, but it's really been over the past few weeks that I've really settled in my brain!

I think what's actually made me really aware of the fct the wedding is coming is the fact that next week is my Hen do!

My sister and Maid of Honour Ciara has arranged the whole thing! All I know is that it is next Saturday ( and to be honest everyone has been throwing me so many red herrings I'm not even totally convinced it is definitely next Saturday!) and I know we are going for something to eat! Ciara was devastated to have to give me the options for what I am going to eat but  I am glad she did!

I am so excited to get some time with family and friends (although I don't even know who is coming along...) and maybe even dancing the night away...

Whatever happens, I will be filling you in with all the details (or at least those I am allowed to share...)

As you saw on Monday's blog we have been short listed for the Cosmo Blog Awards which was a massive surprise! We are up against some massive names! I actually only found out we had been shortlisted when I went to vote for one of my favourite wedding bloggers!

The icing...

So a few weeks ago I mentioned our wedding cake. The weekend before last Catherine and I went to visit a local baker after us boys went to try on our suits. We already knew what type and style of cake we were after. We took an image from 'the google'.

On our way to the Ann Marie's house to chat about the cake (her house is in the middle of the country) we stopped to ask directions from a old man tending a field. We stopped beside him and he shouts over "hello good looking" Catherine said " James he must be talking to you" we asked did he know Ann Marie the baker? To which we replied "oh aye yes" he literally was the Irish Tom Tom. He honestly said:

"Go down this road and you'll come to a cross roads… now you'll look right… then you'll look left… then you'll go straight on."

"You'll come to a 2 story house with a stone wall, a big drive up to the house and a big gate… now this isn't her house that's Declan mcgirs house... Go past that…"

This went on for some time...
Eventually we arrived.

Ann Marie is a very lovely lady. We had a good chat with her about our ideas. We showed her our picture and told her what I expected. You know it's a good sign when a wedding cake baker says "phew… it's going to be a big cake".

Job done.

A note for those who are planning your wedding... You should remember ask when the cake will be ready. We are to collect and pay for ours the night before the wedding so I can deliver it to lusty beg.

A very important factor for us is that the cake is suitable for all our guests. Catherine's sister, chief of honour Ciara, is celiac. Meaning no gluten.
A side note her boyfriend Wayne has caught her allergies so also thinking of him. (Note from Catherine- obviously, Wayne has not "caught her allergies". Also James attempted to spell celiac as "iseelac" lol)

It was a very fun and enjoyable experience. I can't wait to see it on the day.

Message from Catherine!

What's left to do?

I know, I know, I promised I'd get back on the blogging wagon and not miss weeks it I have an excuse. I promise!

So remember when I said we were neatly all organised for the wedding, we were just enjoying the lull...

Well I could t have been more wrong!

We sat down two weeks ago and started writing up the little list of things we needed to do before the wedding!

So that little list turned out to be a massive list!  Two pages with double columns.

So the last two weeks has been trying to make our way through quite a few. Lots of ordering online, building up the courage to ring up suppliers and focusing our minds on the things we really need!

I recently finished up working in Belfast and have been working from home in aughnacloy. It's amazing what a few extra hours in the morning can do!

So I am back, and i promise to have plenty to share with you over the next few weeks! Just 15 days until the Hen do... And I still no nothing about it! Next week I'll be going through all my excitement and nerves!
